2018년 5월 30일, 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 〈수직에서 수평으로: 예술생산의 변화된 조건들〉이라는 제목으로 MMCA 연구 프로젝트가 개최됩니다. 네덜란드의 주요 포스트 아카데믹 인스티튜트에서 참여하여 동시대 예술 생산에 대한 담론을 나눌 예정입니다.

국제 아티스트 레지던시 라익스아카데미(Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten)의 전 디렉터 엘스 판 오데이크(Els van Odijk), 그리고 미술, 디자인, 미술이론에 관한 아카데미이자 레지던시인 얀 반 에이크 아카데미(Jan Van Eyck Academy) 디렉터 렉스 터르 브라크(Lex ter Braak), 벨기에 앤트워프 대학의 문화사회학자인 파스칼 길렌(Pascal Gielen)이 주요 발제자로 참여하며, 자세한 내용은 아래 개요에서 확인할 수 있습니다.

• 개요:

본 국제 연구 심포지엄은 주한 네덜란드 대사관의 후원으로 네덜란드의 예술 기관들과 협력하여 만든 국립현대미술관의 공공 프로그램으로, 과거를 돌아보며 나아가 앞으로 네덜란드와 한국 예술계의 지속 가능한 발전을 모색하고자 한다.

이동성과 네트워크가 활성화된 오늘날 사회에서는 정보에 대한 접근성이 높아지고 더불어 세계가 수평적, 민주적으로 변화하고 있다. 과거에는 전통적 계층 구조나 독점, 도제, 영구성과 같은 수직적 가치가 지배적이었다. 반면 오늘날 온오프라인에서의 신속한 이동성은 시공간의 장벽을 좁히고, 정보뿐 아니라 예술의 민주화, 유연성, 다원성이라는 수평적인 가치를 불러왔다. 결국 이렇게 평평하고 수평적인 구조 속에서 미술관이나 레지던시, 미술 아카데미 같은 예술 기관의 역할 또한 변화를 맞이할 수밖에 없고 이미 그 변화는 진행 중에 있기도 하다. 이 변화는 예술 생산의 조건과도 서로 연결되어 있다. 이번 세미나에서는 이런 동시대 상황이 예술에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 진단하고, 또 예술 생산 자체에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴보고자 한다.

〈From Vertical to Horizontal: The Changed Conditions of Art Production〉

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) will hold MMCA Research Project symposium “From Vertical to Horizontal: The Changed Conditions of Art Production” in MMCA Seoul on the 30th of May. Invited speakers are including but not limited to Els van Odijk, former Director of Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Lex ter Braak, Director of Jan Van Eyck Academy, and Pascal Gielen, Cultural sociologist of Belgium’s Antwerp University. • Outline:

This international research symposium is an MMCA public program in cooperation with Dutch art institutions, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Korea; it is a reflection of the past, while looking towards sustainable development between Dutch and Korean art fields.

As mobility and networking are activated in contemporary society, information has become more accessible and made the world more horizontal and democratic. In the past, vertical values such as a traditional sense of hierarchy, monopoly, apprenticeship or perpetuity were dominant. Yet the swift mobility we see today in both on and the offline world has narrowed the walls of time and space, while introducing the horizontal values of democratization, flexibility, and plurality in information as well as in art. In such flat and horizontal structure, the role of art institutions like art museums, residencies, and art academies are forced to change and the transition is already taking place. Such changes are intertwined with the conditions of art production as well. This seminar shall diagnose what significance art carries in such contemporary environment and observe the effect it has on art production itself.
